At UKG, we're passionate about empowering both individuals and managers by gaining a clearer understanding of workplace personalities.
In our recent survey, conducted with the expertise of behavioural psychologist Donna Dawson, we delved into the different work personalities to uncover and define the most common in the workplace. We also analysed their distinct characteristics, traits and working styles.
Our research identified five prominent work personalities in the modern workplace:
● The Go Getter
● The Visionary
● The Negotiator
● The Thinker
● The Executive
In this article, we will be putting the focus on the Executive. We'll examine who they are, what motivates them and what's important to them. We will also reveal real-world examples of those who identify as having the Executive work personality.
The Executive: Who are they?
Those who identify as having the Executive workplace personality operate within a company as they do in their own lives. Their approach is based on principles such as fairness, justice, and a strong sense of what's right and wrong.
Executives thrive on structures and standards. They may not be the most innovative thinkers, but they are known for their consistent and high quality work in every task they undertake. Our survey found that 14% of respondents were classed as an Executive.
Executive traits
The Executive is often a results-driven individual who is willing to sacrifice personal relationships to deliver success for the business. They tend to compare all activities to a company ideal, which can often be a problem for co-workers. The Executive traits include:
● Hardworking
● Conscientious
● Organised
● Structured thinker
Real-world examples of The Executive
One of the best real-world examples of an Executive is American author, attorney and former First Lady Michelle Obama. Her strong character has helped her fight for social issues and stand up for what she believes in.
Another example of an Executive is former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. When she was elected in 2017, she became the world's youngest serving female leader. During her time as prime minister, she emerged as a resilient, compassionate and empathetic leader.
What the expert says
Following analysis of the Executive work personality, behavioural psychologist Donna Dawson said:
"This personality type operates within a company as they do in their own life, on a set of principles and on the basis of what is "right". Managers should show them how proposals are in line with what is traditionally done. Make proposals that will serve the greater good of the company or work team and are fair and honourable."
